Career Happiness Should Be at the Top of Your List in 2014

At the end of each year, we all hope that the next one will be happier, more exciting, and perhaps, more successful.

However, if January comes and you return to your office feeling drained after half an hour, what has actually changed for you? If this is the case, and if you don't initiate any substantial career change, a new leaf on the calendar means absolutely nothing.

Now, let's imagine a different scenario. It is January and you feel the holiday was far too long and you can't wait to get back to work-whether a company employs you or you run your own business. If you are unhappy at work, you probably don't believe such enthusiasm exists; but trust me, it does.

What is standing between situation 1 and situation 2? Nothing more than a decision. At any point, you can decide that you have had enough of your "old working style" and that you are going to find a way to make your career fun, engaging, interesting and personally fulfilling.

To make that decision can be the most difficult part of the process, therefore allow me to give you some tips to help you along.

1.) Working with a coach can be a life-changing experience. If you are hesitant to try the process, talk to friends or colleagues who worked with a coach previously. I can assure you that if you find the right person, you will find coaching fun, supportive and encouraging. You will also get the desired results faster.

2.) If you feel that coaching is not for you, invest in a book that describes the process of a career change in easy and precise steps. Authors of such books usually worked with lots of people in similar situation to yours, thus they are a trusted source of knowledge and wisdom.

3.) If you still find such commitment daunting, you can perhaps start with reading articles about other "career change success stories". These days, you can find them in every magazine; that is your proof that such change is indeed very realistic and possible. Inspiration is known to be an excellent catalyst for a long-desired change and ambition.

I really hope that you will follow-up on my recommendations and that you will make your 2014 special. Make it a year when you create a vision of yourself as a "super-happy in my career" person and then step into those shoes.

New Year's Resolutions 2014: The Missing Piece

People make New Years resolutions. Some people call them goals. Some call them intentions. But most of us make them. We can't help ourselves. We are so profoundly drawn to the clean slate. We so dearly want another chance to succeed. We love the idea of having our past failures wiped clean off the surface and starting anew. We love getting a glimpse of a reality where it looks like we can actually win. We simply love all that. I mean, who wouldn't?

But if you've had the same New Years resolution year after year and you barely get past January, maybe March, before it's forgotten or cluttered with feelings of failure again, then it can be difficult to get excited about that clean slate. We stop believing in it.

The Missing Piece of the Puzzle for Success

But what if you could know deep down that this time it could work. What if you could believe with utter conviction that you can succeed this time? How eager and encouraged would you feel? How much time would you put into getting clear about your intention?

People who succeed do not all have the same plan or the same strategies or the same action steps. They didn't all go to the same school or study with the same guru. But they all reach a point where they have a vision and a knowing and an unwavering trust that this is going to happen for them.

You may have all the education, the strategies, the action plans, but if you do not find yourself in a place of knowing your success, right down to the core of you, then you are missing the most important piece.

Find Your Inner Knowing

When you know your truth, the truth of your success in whatever area you want it, you do not get stopped by the conditions that seem to be in your way. You stay on the path, you modify the path, you trust the journey and you keep going.

Oh, and by the way, when you can envision yourself living the reality you desire, you are well on your way. Let the power of your imagination guide your actions.

Take conditions out of the equation and ask yourself, "What would it take for me to know I could succeed this time?" Ponder this. Find your inner knowing of your success. Then watch your actions take flight.

How to React with People Who Criticize You?

Unless your skin is amazingly thick, criticism hurts. Some actors and television stars go as far as avoiding the press the day after their show, just in case they've been criticized. There's something about being criticized - even if you know deep down that the critic is right - that just cuts through you.

So how should you react when people criticize you?

Part of the answer depends on where the criticism took place.

Often it's easier to shrug it off in real life than it is online but both can be awkward.

In real life, it's usually best to shrug the critic off as much as possible.

That's fairly easy to do if they make a habit of finding small holes wherever they look - you can essentially say that it's nothing to do with you, it's simply what the other person does.

If, on the other hand, you've been found doing something dumb then often the best solution is to put your hands up and admit that whatever it is you're being criticized about is a fair comment and that you got it wrong. This has the advantage that it often smooths out the problem concerned. Your honesty in admitting the issue trumps the person who called you out on it.

Of course, if that happens too often it can lead to a downward spiral where you end up making more mistakes and being criticized more often. A pattern that it's best not to get into but if you find yourself there, you need to take steps to dig yourself out rather than dig yourself further in.

Nowadays, criticism online is often a bigger problem than face to face.

Cyber bullying happens at school - that's another form of criticism and one that a lot of school children have difficulty coping with.

But criticism can take place almost anywhere you turn online.

Blog comments, additions to your your videos, Facebook, forums, etc. Anywhere that people gather together online.

And there's something much more public about that - partly because it is available for the world to see and, in your mind's eye, the whole world has seen it.

How you deal with criticism online is a much more difficult art to master.

There's a lot to be said for simply ignoring it.

The less comments there are, the quicker the page concerned will fall off everyone's radar and the quicker it will disappear.

If you really have to reply, take the time to compose your words somewhere else - your word processor or even a sheet of paper.

Then read them through before posting them online. Ideally, you should read them out loud and if at all possible run them past someone you trust before pressing the "send" button.

Because on the internet our words have a habit of coming back to haunt us.

Just as you can't retrieve an email or a text once it's sent, it's difficult to unpost a reply on the web. Before you know it, Google will have indexed it or someone will have Tweeted about it.

Then you can end up with egg on your face, simply because you were trying to defend yourself from criticism.

The Greatest Christmas Gift You Never Thought Of

This is the time of year when our thoughts should take a bit of a detour into more spiritual waters. Hopefully amid all the chaos of Christmas shopping, traveling, the stresses of family gatherings and the commerciality of it all, we'll find the time to reflect on the Christ and what His birth meant to the world. Perhaps we'll also ponder generosity and what the true spirit of giving is about. But what most of us won't think about is our true nature and the true state of the world in which we live. Perhaps we should.

Let me explain. The vast majority of us live in an immensely powerful illusion not unlike, in many ways, what was depicted in the popular movie, "The Matrix." Hindus refer to it as Maya. In essence it means that the true nature of ourselves and our world is hidden from us by a veil of the material. The same concept is present in most of the world's religions and spiritual philosophies. While those religions and philosophies differ from one another in a great many ways, the concept that the true nature of both man and the universe is spiritual is common to most all of them. Hmmm - might there be a reason that for once they all seem to agree?

Perhaps we can look to science for an answer. The field of quantum physics has long theorized that matter or what we perceive as "solid objects" is simply energy vibrating at various frequencies. The emergence of modern particle accelerators like the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN in Switzerland and FermiLab in Chicago have all but erased any lingering doubt that this is indeed the case. That means that everything, you, your dog, the coffee table, and the monitor you are reading this on are made of the same stuff. You simply perceive them differently because of their differing vibrational frequencies. What? WOW! Everything we thought we knew about our environment and our world is an illusion. Even science and spirituality are in rare agreement. (although those agreements are becoming far less rare) Who would have thought?

So that brings us back to our original point, who are we really? If we are to take our collective and individual behavior as any indication, it's not a pretty picture. We kill each other in massive numbers every single day of the year and justify it in ways too many to count. Governments construct a beautiful and elaborate facade of nationalism which allows us to feel justified in our killing. We torture and kill the animals of the earth by the tens of millions, often for fun or sport, with precious little thought or emotion. Even when we are killing them for food, we have allowed the profit motive to condemn them to live in vile conditions so heinous that most of us, if we were to ever see it first hand, would wretch. With our words and actions we consistently condemn the "otherness" of our fellow human beings - other race, other religion, other socio-economic class, other nationality, the list goes on. And perhaps our greatest crime? We pass all of these behaviors and attitudes on to our children thus perpetuating the great illusion. There is nothing more in the world they want than to be like us, to gain our approval. So they emulate our broken behavior and we reward them for it. The cycle is forever perpetuated.

So this Christmas, perhaps we can give ourselves a new gift - the gift of sight. The gift to see beyond the Maya, beyond the great illusion. If we can do that, if we can begin to truly see not with our eyes but with our souls, then we will finally begin to see the world and ourselves as it, and we, truly are - loving spirit. There is but one way I know to accomplish this and that is, as Neo in "The Matrix" did, take the red pill. What's the red pill? It is awareness. It is waking up from automatic behavior, questioning everything and applying one filter to all you words and actions. That filter is, "Is this loving, spiritual behavior? Is this who I really am or some conditioned response I was taught or inherited? Is this the example I want to set? Does this make the world a better place for all beings? Be still and listen to the still, small voice. The answers will always be there.

So this Christmas, give yourself and those around you the greatest gift you never thought of, the gift of true sight.

Are You a Real Friend?

What kind of friend are you? Below are some of the things good friends do.

Do you:

  • Listen with caring and attention?
  • Support what brings your friend joy?
  • Have the courage to speak your truth when you see your friend harming herself or himself?
  • Reach out frequently?
  • Return calls, texts and emails in a timely manner?
  • Feel joy for your friend's joy and pain for their pain?
  • Help when you are asked for help?
  • Share your own struggles and ask for help or support?

Or, do you:

  • Try to fix your friend, thinking you know better?
  • Lecture, criticize and judge?
  • Feel envious of your friend?
  • Try to keep your friend from being all he or she can be?
  • Talk on and on and don't listen?
  • Brag and try to make your friend feel one down, envious or jealous?
  • Make everything about you?
  • Take a long time to return a call, text or email?
  • Wait for your friend to reach out?
  • Refuse to be open and vulnerable with your friend?

If you find yourself more on the second list than on the first list, you might want to explore why you are not able or willing to be a good friend. What are you afraid will happen if you are open, caring and supportive?

The ego wounded self generally comes from a fear of lack and scarcity. This fear may translate into believing that if you support your friend in being all he or she can be, somehow you will lose out - that there isn't enough for both of you in the universe. If you have this false belief, where did you get it? How is it serving you to believe it? How do you feel when you try to keep your friend limited so that you won't lose out? Do you believe that the only way you will feel good about yourself is if someone else feels bad about themselves? If you believe this, where did you get this false belief?

Since all of our feelings are informational, if you are envious or jealous of your friend, there is a good reason for it. The good reason likely has to do with old fears and beliefs that you acquired in childhood and that are now making it hard for you to be a good friend. You might want to take the time to explore what false beliefs lie under your jealousy or envy. What beliefs about yourself do you have that are limiting you and keeping you from having whatever you are jealous and envious about? What fears are keeping you from manifesting what you want in your life?

Until you become a real friend with yourself, you might have problems being a real friend with others. Being a real friend with yourself means seeing, valuing and supporting your own gifts and talents - your own real Self. When you can cherish who you are in your essence - your true Self - then it becomes easy to see, value and support your friends. When you learn to treat yourself with love, you will naturally treat your friends with love, too.

Connected, caring friendship is vitally important to our wellbeing. People tend to mirror how we treat ourselves, so the more connected and caring you are with yourself, the more you will attract connected, caring friends into your life.

"A real friend is one who helps us to think our noblest thoughts, put forth our best efforts, and be our best selves." ~Anonymous

Time to Evaluate the Good, Bad and Useless in Your Life

If you've heard the saying 'clean house' you know it doesn't necessarily imply using any harsh cleaning supplies. Cleaning house can also be referred to your 'internal house.' Just as we would go through our rooms in our homes, dust, polish, declutter and rid of old useless items... we find it helpful to do this within ourselves, too.

It's best to start by taking inventory. You'll want to note the good, bad and useless that live within. These can be habits, traits, feelings, actions, relationships, careers... anything that comes to mind about your internal housekeeping. Take note on what you love and what you hate, what is useful to you and maybe not so useful. Awareness is key. Once an inventory is created it will be much easier to choose what to polish and shine... or not.

[Tweet "Awareness is key."]

So take out a piece of paper and on the front jot down all the good. And then on the back, write everything you're not too fond about. Where you're stressed, frazzled, where you could use some improvement.

Now once your list is created. Take the items, habits, feelings, traits, relationships, careers from the back, the ones you don't find helpful, useful or healthy and begin to make note of how you can eliminate these from your life. What can you do to transform these not so good areas into something great? Think how life would be different once this area was transformed into something that serves you vs. works against you.

Okay next. The items on your list you love and want to have stick around. These are the items that make you feel good, that you're proud of, that make you smile at the thought of them. Take time to reflect on how each of them make you feel. What good do they bring to your life? And now consider, how can you attract more of the same in to your life?

Your inventory can be as long or as short as you wish. Think of each area in your life as a different room. One may be relationships, one may be work, one may be family, one may be financial. When you enter each 'room' give some thought on how you can clean up that area to better serve you. Taking this time and going through this process gives you the opportunity to attract and remove whatever you'd like in your life.

You have to choice on what sticks around in your life. Why not make a conscious decision and start creating better experiences for yourself?
