Stay Healthy this Christmas!

Staying healthy this Christmas season can be a balancing act, but one that is well worth it. You can have fun and partake in all that the holidays have to offer and still come out on the other side healthy, happy and ready for the new year. It's a countdown now to Christmas and then New Year's Eve after that, so here are some ideas to enjoy your holidays and avoid too much regret later!

Breathe. Yep. Breathe. Breathe deeply and often. Write "Breathe" on a Post It and keep it by your phone, bed, mirror or desk. Or all four. Get some exercise before the parties, so you can enjoy just a little bit more and still fit into those pants Christmas day. You can't spell Merry with out "ME" so take some time for YOU and still get those workouts in! I would also highly suggest getting a massage (or three) this month to remove toxins, relax those muscles and just generally feel better. And finish off some evenings with a hot bath with Epsom Salt. It removes any toxins from food that can cause you to be sore, become sick or just feel generally icky. And it feels so good! You know you'll be glad you did.

Drink lots of water this month. Winter is dry and dehydration can lead to so many issues, and amazingly, water can fix them all. Lots more water, and lots less liquor and sugary drinks. Save those calories for something you really want, (but not too much!) And if you see a salad this winter, grab it. It might be the only one you see all season. Fill up on carrot sticks and a little ranch at parties instead of spinach dip and chips. Use parties to visit with friends and family, and try to focus on that instead of good but calorie hoarding food. You'll sleep better at night and start January with (hopefully) no more pounds added.

New Year's Eve is for resolutions but wouldn't it be great if we could head into the new year with goals that we can be proud of for keeping during this sugar laden time instead of figuring out ways to remove all the problems that the party food added all of December? Ahh, what a goal indeed! I of course write this to be hopeful and as a goal; not necessarily because I will be able to do all of these things myself. But goals are good, right? Natural Components of Apple Peels Help Prevent Muscle Weakness


In search of an effective method to prevent muscle wasting that comes with illness and aging, researchers have located a natural compound that is very promising.

The findings reported in the June issue of Cell Metabolism (a Cell Press publication), identify a natural component of apple peels known as Ursolic Acid as a promising newnutritional therapy for the widespread and debilitating condition that affects nearly everyone at one time or another.

"Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and aging," explained researchers from The University of Iowa, Iowa City. "It prolongs hospitalization, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people going back home. It isn't well understood and there is no medicine for it."

The research team first looked at what happens to gene activity in muscles under conditions that promote weakening. Those studies turned up 63 genes that change in response to fasting in both people and mice and another 29 that shift their expression in the muscles of both people who are fasting and those with spinal cord injury. Comparison of those gene expression signatures to the signatures of cells treated with more than 1300 bio-active small molecules led them to ursolic acid as a compound with effects that might counteract those of atrophy.

"Ursolic Acid is an interesting natural compound," they said. "It's part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. They always say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away..."

The researchers next gave Ursolic Acid to fasted laboratory subjects. Those experiments showed that ursolic acid could protect against muscle weakening as predicted. When ursolic acid was added to the food of normal subjects for a period of weeks, their muscles grew. Those effects were traced back to enhanced insulin signaling in muscle and to corrections in the gene signatures linked to atrophy.

The subjects given ursolic acid also became leaner and had lower blood levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. The findings therefore suggest that ursolic acid may be responsible for some of the overall benefits of healthy eating.

"We know if you eat a balanced diet like mom told us to eat you get this material," the researchers explained "People who eat junk food don't get this."

It is not yet clear whether the findings will translate to human patients, but the goal now is to "figure out if this can help people." If so, they don't yet know whether Ursolic Acid at levels that might be consumed as part of a normal diet might or might not be enough.

Australian parents significantly overestimate the amount of sleep their teenagers are getting and underestimate how late they are getting to sleep, says a researcher.
And only one in five high school students has a bed time set by their parents, says Dr Michelle Short, a researcher at the University of Australia in Adelaide.
This, together with late-night phone and internet use, means most fall short of the more than nine hours of sleep experts believe they need.
"Parents have a completely idealised picture of what is going," says Dr Short, a speaker at an Australian Sleep Association conference in Brisbane.
She has conducted a study of 308 families that shows 21 per cent of teens believe they have a sleep problem, but only 14 per cent of parents are aware of it.
But it's much worse. The research shows many more are unaware they have a clinical sleep problem that affects their functioning and wellbeing.
"Maybe parents let go a bit early," says Dr Short, whose research was inspired by her own son's reluctance to accept a set bed time.
"He asked what evidence I had that teenagers need parents to tell them what time to go to bed.
"It took a year, but I was able to go back and tell him here's your evidence, now go to bed.".
"Teenagers are being woken up by messaging and phone calls."

"Any job I get I lose because my eyes start bleeding and they can't keep me on," Spann said. "Obviously, I can't be a waiter and work in any public thing because you are bleeding."
There is no known cure for Spann's condition and because he doesn't have a job, he has no health coverage.
"He will start talking to someone, and his eyes will start filling up with blood," his mother, Peggy Spann said.
"They haven't seen it before, and it will scare the living daylights out of them. It is very frustrating not to be able to treat or even get some kind of remission for it."
Ophthalmologist, Dr. James "Chris" Fleming, of the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre's Hamilton Eye Institute in Memphis, told The Tenessean he suspected the condition was less rare than originally thought, but that as sufferers matured the symptoms subsided.
"There probably is a cause, but it is a small tear duct that is only a millimetre or two or three in diameter," Dr Fleming said.
"It's a tube. To get into that tube and examine that tube from one end to the other would cause scarring, and you could lose part of the tear duct. That's the dilemma that can cause problems, that we will leave someone with a permanent disability."
In June, a Chilean woman told of the "indescribable pain" when she cried tears of blood.
In 2009, another Tennessee resident, 15-year-old Calvino Inman, reported crying tears of blood up to three times a day.
He said the tears burned and could last between 15 minutes to an hour.
